Every site owner and webmaster usually redesigns their website having specific goals. One of that is to increase the number of visitors. Redesigning effects web traffic. So when you go for redesigning your website, it is important to have a clear goal in your mind. Only focusing on the artistic aspects of redesigning will not help you to increase traffic to your website you need to address customer needs as well. Today I will give you with 9 tips to consider when you redesign a website.

Avoid pitfalls. Inventory your assets, and then protect them.

The effort you put on to build up your existing website is countless. All the information in the site has helped you to increase customers. First you need to find out which assets are more important (content, keyword, links) and protect them carefully. Most of the time web designers don't consider this. They are web expert and not marketing expert. If you don't retain your important assets, website redesign can give you negative impact as a result.

Do not change everything at once.

You can change everything, but it’s best not to do all at once. Your visitors might have got used to navigate your website in a specific way. If you don’t keep some contents/links/keywords as same as the past, you will lose all continuity and it’s almost like launching a site from scratch. There will be situations which require redesigning the whole site at once, but in most cases partial changes will help the users to adjust the way of surfing your site.

Do your home work

Do your home work before you redesign the website. Website redesign is like renovating your home. Will you renovate your home without considering yours and your family member’s needs?  Find out as much as possible about the current state of your website by analyzing web traffic data and feedback from users. Also take the time to learn more about your target audiences needs.

Identify your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) needs

Do you need to improve your URL Structure?

Do you need to improve your site navigation?

The website should be redesigned with strong navigation and strategic placement of keywords. So spiders can run through the contents of your website easily. Don’t bypass the SEO details thinking as this can be included after launching the website. That's backward. You need to ensure that your website redesign increases your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Create search engine friendly pages. You can index home page easily but addition to that you have to make sure that all the pages are enabled for easy index and able to rank.

301-Redirects of Old URL’s

This is a very important step which need to be considered re-launching the website. Because when you redesign the website most probably your old URL will be change into a different URL structure, which already indexed by search engines and built-up a trust over time. When you launch the new website, all those old pages are now going to turn into 404-error pages. Search engine doesn’t like websites that have lots of dead pages in their index. Take time and map your old pages and URL to new site.  Then set up a 301-Redirect (permanent redirect) from the old pages to the new ones. This will ensure the users who click on SERP results are still directed to relevant pages.

Keep the website user friendly

You can do this by making clear navigation. Don't let the user think. Make easy links and allow the user to land in the content page by one or two clicks.

Follow web standards

To make Internet a better place, for both developers and end-users, it is important that you follow the Web standards. Using web standards will help you to ensure that all browsers will display your web site properly, without frequent and time-consuming rewrites.

Web pages that conform to the standard are easier for search engines to access and index and easier to convert to other formats too.

Don't forget to test and Get feedback

Test the site for bugs, broken links, missing images, unstructured and non styled text and non working functionality. Do usability testing and see how the information is laid out. Get the feedback of your new website from few of your target audience.

Always have a backup

Last but not least you should take a backup of your old design. In case if your new website fails to meet the goal you need to revert back to your old website.
